UART display module

The RS232 LCD module is a kind of serial display module that based on EIA-RS-232 standard. This standard is widely used in serial communication, like PC peripheral equipments, such as teletype and modem. LCD module that works in UART pattern is also called UART LCD module. That is to say, every serial LCD module and TFT LCM with RS232 compatible is a UART LCD. Its instinct advantage lies in no synchronization signal transferring by another line, which is suitable for kinds of application and systems that require low power consumption and Simplified circuits.
However, the synchronization signal is added before and after data transmitting. This may cause a slice delay of response potentially. LCD module manufacturers have developed several reliable technologies to assure its real-time performance. A mainstream technology is based on utilizing the built-in MCU, by using a simple but powerful command-set. As a classic solution of time-space and time-processing swap, this lead to the balance of developing time and cost. Some Graphic lcd module companies in China have already advanced an approach to settle this down. By introducing intelligence into UART TFT Display Module, developers can finish their design within a predictable time period, by figuring out specified program to send the fixed commands to LCD display module.

Monochrome data transfer

Data transfer function is pretty necessary for TFT LCD module. Recently, one of our customers asked for a new feature: monochrome data transfer. In his application, monochrome image data needs to be transferred from LCD display of the aquarium computer to TFT LCD module for remote control. He prints 244 pixels in each line, for 64 lines. Old command for data transfer is ok for this requirement, but it is very slow because the user has to transfer for each line more than 500 Bytes, which takes 40ms at 115200 baud rate. Each printed point needs 2 bytes for the color, but actually there are only 2 colors: background and foreground. So it is very beneficial to have a command which allows the transfer of monochrome picture data (patterns). To solve the problem, the feature is developed.
There are some important points to consider when creating the new command for transferring monochrome data. It should be possible that the count of transferred pixels is not always a multiple of 8 (8, 16, 24 ?, e.g. if the user prints 122 and 244 pixels, it is not enough to count the transferred bytes of monochrome data (bit masks).
There shall be 2 solutions for this:
a) the amount of pixels to be printed have to be transmitted also after coordinates
b) create 2 different commands: one command prints the set bits with foreground color, the other with background color, the clear bits do not have any affect (transparent)
When the user wants a specific color under the line of monochrome data, the user can use the line-command before sending the monochrome data to TFT LCD module.

Re-synchronization is not possible

For our Synchronization solution, some customers are worried that the reaction time of the LCD module will be longer than that under normal conditions in case of re-synchronization since they holds the CPU's sending commands to LCD module can not rely on the fast reaction time of the display (approx. 2 msec per command).
In fact, this situation doesn't exist at all because processing speed of CPU is much faster, compared with communication speed. The other customers think for a save communication path between CPU and LCD module there should be some interaction to let the CPU know what has happened, otherwise the CPU will not know how many frames were lost. Because of the automatic re-synchronization, which takes place within the display, the information of the pointer status will be overwritten. They ask for interaction between CPU and LCD module which can't be realized by automatic re-synchronization.
This problem does exist. The solution is by "checking-response" way. But if this method is applied, the protocol will be very complicated and troublesome. For example, if some response is lost, the command needs to be re-sent. Furthermore, the command re-sent shall be numbered one by one.  In this way, it is not meaningful to use our display module, since the biggest feature of our product is its easy operation.

Serial LCD module as solution for cash terminal

Our serial LCD module is suitable for different applications of various industries. For example, a customer likes to build a display into a cash terminal. He has a save interaction between the outside world and the CPU (SSL or something similar). But communication between CPU and the display must be saved. All communication bytes are well specified in the command documentation and the documentation is freely available in the internet. However, this communication path is open; it is not safe at all.
Now, the bank house wants us to ensure that there is no way to manipulate the electronic parts within the cash terminal. Currently, it seems impossible because it is easy to decode the communication transfer on the RS232 interface since all codes can be obtained from the internet. By knowing the bytes transferred, it is possible to manipulate the output of the display without attacking the (save) CPU.
The solution is to add a password byte (or word) to the data transfer code, which is sent to the display. We called this procedure "user password". The password byte would be used by the serial LCD module to decode the incoming transfer bytes. So, even using a data logger, one cannot find out what type of transfer is going on between the CPU and the Serial lcd module, because one can not see any "clear text". Thus, attacking the RS232 interface is almost impossible and security communication can be guaranteed.

Password-protection feature

Password-protection feature of intelligent UART LCD module sometimes plays a very important role in some fields, such as bank system. The typical application is ATM. 
It is necessary to protect the display itself against misuse, so it is recommended that the UART LCD module has a user-password, which has to be sent to the serial display terminal after power-on. Without the user-password the display will not show any picture. Besides, it is recommended that the UART LCD module has a supervisor-password. Without the supervisor-password the display will not readout the pictures stored in its memory, so this supervisor-password acts like a read-protection for the display-memory. Lastly, it is recommended that the UART LCD module has a diag-password. Without the diag-password the display will not change its picture memory, therefore this diagnostic password will act like a write-protection for the display-memory. The feature aims to provide service and displays to medical and instrumentation companies as well as to bank houses.
It is absolutely necessary to protect the UART LCD module and its memory from any manipulation or misuse. If there is no password-feature implemented, then there is almost no chance for the UART LCD module to go into the said fields. If customers have such requirements, we are in the position to revise our software and add password feature accordingly.
